French Press

French Press is a quick brew, only four minutes, and an elegant cup of joe. Though a bit on the denser side, French Press coffee is a rich and delicious cup that’s enjoyed immediately after brewing to avoid chalky or bitter coffee.

The Deets

Coffee Amount

  • 21 grams
  • 1:16-1:18 coffee to water

Grind Size

  • Coarse

Water Amount & Temp

  • 350 grams
  • 205°F

Brew Time

  • 5 minutes

step one

Prepare Coffee & Water

Heat your water. Bring enough water to fill the French press to a boil. For a 17-oz press, you'll need about 350 grams (12 ounces).

Grind your coffee to a coarse grind. The best ratio of coffee to water to start at is 1:16.

step two

Bloom The Coffee

Gently pour twice the amount of water than you have coffee onto your grounds. For example, if you have 30 grams of coffee, you’ll start with 60 grams of water. Give the grounds a gentle stir and allow the coffee to bloom for 1 minute.

step three

Poor The Remaining Water

Don’t press down yet. Let the coffee steep for four minutes exactly. Exactly four.

step four

Press!

Gently press down. If your plunger goes too fast, your grounds are too coarse and if it’s too hard, then they’re too fine. It should be about 15 to 20 pounds of pressure when pushing down.

step five

Enjoy!

Pour immediately after pressing! Don’t allow the coffee to sit.
